Thermoplastic UD Tapes
Thermoplastic unidirectional (UD) tapes combine continuous reinforcing fibers—glass, carbon, or aramid—with a thermoplastic matrix such as polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), or polyether ether ketone (PEEK). Because the reinforcement runs in a single direction, the tapes concentrate stiffness and tensile strength along the fiber axis, giving designers the ability to place strength exactly where a part needs it.
The thermoplastic matrix sets these tapes apart from thermoset prepregs: it can be melted, reshaped, and reconsolidated, which makes the material recyclable and compatible with fast, automated forming cycles. The tapes also bring chemical resistance, good damage tolerance, and strong interlayer adhesion after consolidation.
Typical applications include aerospace primary and secondary structure, automotive structural and semi-structural parts, continuous pressure pipes, sports equipment, and ballistic protection, where replacing metal lowers weight without sacrificing durability.
Processing options include automated tape laying (ATL), automated fiber placement (AFP), thermoforming, press consolidation, and hybrid overmolding with injection molding. Laser or infrared heating enables in-situ consolidation, and tape can be laminated at 0°/90° to build quasi-isotropic layups.
