PIR Sandwich Panel
The PIR sandwich panel consists of a rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam core between two pre-painted steel or aluminum face sheets. PIR is a thermoset foam, meaning it chars rather than melts when exposed to flame. Compared to standard PUR (polyurethane) foam, PIR offers better fire performance and lower thermal conductivity, which is why it has become the default choice for cold storage and food-processing construction.
The foam core is produced through a continuous one-shot foaming process, where the two metal facings act as the mold. This means the core bonds directly to the steel skins during foaming, without requiring a separate adhesive layer. Panels join side-to-side using tongue-and-groove profiles with optional cam-lock fasteners to create vapor-tight enclosures.
Typical applications include walk-in freezers and coolers, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, temperature-controlled warehouses, and prefabricated building envelopes where insulation performance directly determines operating cost.
