Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GRP) balsa sandwich panels combine fiberglass skins with a balsa wood core, delivering lightweight construction with high compressive strength for structural applications. The GRP skins contain 30% to 40% resin matrix (thermosetting or thermoplastic) reinforced with glass fibers, while the balsa core provides natural low-density material with excellent resin compatibility.
Balsa wood, one of the fastest-growing trees, typically has a density of 130 to 180 kg/m³. Its cellular structure bonds effectively with GRP skins through hot melt or adhesive lamination, creating a sandwich configuration that distributes loads efficiently and enhances mechanical performance.
The panels offer compressive strength, thermal insulation, and resistance to moisture, corrosion, and mechanical impact. Additional properties include fire retardance, fatigue resistance, and environmental recyclability. Standard panels are available in thicknesses from 5 to 50 mm, with dimensions up to 3.2 meters wide and 12 meters long, customizable for specific project requirements.
Manufacturing involves slicing, patching, cutting, grinding, heating, dehumidifying, coating, and trimming the balsa core before lamination with GRP skins, ensuring controlled density and precise bonding for optimal panel integrity and long service life.
